716,544. Stuffing-box and piston packing. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. March 3, 1952 [March 2, 1951], No. 5173/51. Classes 122(1) and 122(5) A sealing device between two relatively movable members comprises a flexible sealing ring of channel shaped cross section mounted on one of the members and a sleeve which is a sliding fit on the surface of the other member and is interposed between one side wall of the sealing ring and the said surface and extends from the base of said wall towards the free edge thereof to an extent such as to leave a lip portion in sealing contact with the said surface. A piston rod 1 is sealed where it passes through a cylinder end cover 2 by two channel section sealing rings 8 positioned back-to-back in a cylindrical bore in the cover by retaining rings 11. Each ring 8 is fitted on a sleeve 9 slidable on the rod 1 and having an outward flange 10 held between the base of the ring 8 and an abutment 7 on the cover 2. The sealing rings 8 project, axially beyond their associated sleeves 9, to which they may be bonded, to form flexible lips that sealingly engage the piston rod 1. The invention may be applied as a piston packing in which case each sleeve 9 is interposed between the corresponding sealing ring 8 and the cylinder wall. Specification 716,545 is referred to.
