Abstract

819,387. Pipe couplings. BENTON & STONE Ltd. Feb. 13, 1958 [March 1, 1957], No. 6847/57. Class 99(1). In a pipe coupling comprising a hollow body part a housing a piston b or equivalent means subjected to the pressure of a fluid, and a sealing ring e of rubber or rubber-like material adapted to be engaged with a hollow object, e.g. a pipe f, to be tested, the axial end faces of the ring are engaged by an abutment j on the body part and by means connected to the piston so that relative movement between the abutment and piston results in the ring being axially compressed and expanded in a radial direction into sealing engagement with the pipe. As shown, the piston, flexible diaphragm or bellows carries a sealing ring c and has attached thereto a pipe g, and a duct h formed or on secured to the piston and extending through a boss d on the part a is provided with lateral ports i leading to the interior of the body ; secured to the outer end of the duct is a pressure part k which abuts against the ring e. The latter is inserted into the pipe f and pressure fluid acting on the piston causes the part k to compress the ring e and expand the ring into fluid-sealing contact with the pipe. In a modification, the sealing ring e embraces the pipe and is axially compressed by a slidable part formed on or secured to the piston b.
