Abstract
847,783. Stuffing-box substitutes. METALLSCHLAUCHFABRIK PFORZHEIM VORM. HCH. WITZENMANN G.m.b.H. April 27, 1959 [June 2, 1958], No. 14220/59. Class 122 (5). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] In a resilient coupling or mounting between two members 1, 2 which are relatively movable to one another and of which at least one member 2 is hollow and subject to internal pressure, there is interposed between the members a closed, pressure-tight compartment a formed in part from bellows 3, 4 comprising axially-compressible and/or flexible corrugated tubes, which are so connected to the members as to take up relative movement therebetween without altering the total volume of the compartment, the latter containing a pressure medium at a pressure adapted to accommodate the respective pressure differentials associated with the members which are applied to the bellows up to the maximum permissible pressure for the bellows. As shown in Fig. 1, the bellows 3, 4 which surround the tubular member 1 are connected to the latter at 5, 6 and to a flange 9 of the member 2 to form the compartment a, a portion 10 of the member 2 engaging over the bellows 4 and forming a pressure-chamber b. Relative axial movement between the members results in compression of one of the bellows and extension of the other bellows. In modifications, (a) a bellows member 11, Fig. 5, is secured between the members 1 and 2 to form a second closed compartment b, (b) there are two pressure-tight compartments a, d, Fig. 4, formed by pairs of bellows 3, 4 and 14, 15 and a pressure chamber b, and (c) the ends 5, 6, Fig. 6, of bellows 3, 4 are secured to the flange 25 on the stem 1a of a valve and the valve body 22, and the ends 7, 8 of the bellows are connected to one another and the valve housing by an annular body 26, the outer sides of the bellows 3, 4 being respectively subjected to atmospheric pressure and the pressure of the medium flowing through the valve.
