Abstract
A compensator for hot pipes, esp. ducts for liq. metal in a nuclear power plant, comprises two coaxial flexible elements (corrugated pipe lengths or bellows), arranged axially in succession and welded to each other at their adjacent ends, and to the same portion of the hot duct at their other ends. A larger dia. tube or jacket surrounding the one bellows is welded at one of its ends to the joint between the two bellows and at the other of its ends either to the portion of pipe not welded to the bellows or to the pressure vessel etc. Hot liq. metal is permanently present in the space between this jacket and the bellows while the space inside both the bellows, and outside the duct is filled with a compressible medium, such as inert gas, or is kept under vacuum, and is monitored for the presence of any leaked liq. metal. Used for liq. metal cooled reactors, Also for hot corrosive chemicals. Liq. metal is always outside the corrugations of bellows, so does not accumulate in the bellows. Inspection of the space inside the bellows is possible, through the joint. The bellows forms a second containment of any leaked liquid.
