Abstract
910,827. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 17, 1961 [May 25, 1960], No. 18401/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] A duct system, e.g. that installed in an operating chamber of a CO 2 gas-cooled nuclear reactor installation, comprises a duct confined within a longitudinal radiation-shielding structure and means for detecting leakage of fluid from the duct into the space defined by the outer walls of the duct and the inner walls of the shielding structure. In one embodiment (Fig. 4), a CO 2 carrying duct 35 is confined within a longitudinal shielding structure 36 formed by the under-face of a concrete biological shielding 37 and a thick-walled, U -sectioned cast-iron structure 38. A pipe 39, which penetrates a wall of the structure 38, connects with the inlet side of an evacuating pump 41, the outlet side being connected by a branch pipe 43 to a radio-activity monitor 42. Pump 41 is driven by an electric motor 48 which, under normal conditions, drives it at a slow speed but, should a leakage of CO 2 from the duct 35 occur, the subsequent increase in pressure in the pipe 39 is sensed by a pressure-sensitive pump controller 50 which operates through signal lines 51 connected to the pump motor 48 to increase the speed of the pump 41. The outlet side of the pump 41 normally leads to the atmosphere through pipe 52 and valve 55 but, should radioactive contaminants be present in any leakage of CO 2 removed by the pump 41, the radioactivity monitor 42 emits signals through signal lines 59, 60 which result in opening of a valve 56 and closing of the valve 55. Valve 56 located in a pipe 53 connecting the outlet side of the pump 41 with a scrubbing tower 54 through which a pump 61 circulates Na 2 CO 3 solution. Clean CO 2 gas passes through an outlet 63 to the atmosphere and radio-active contaminants are discharged in sludge form through a drain 64. In an alternative embodiment (not shown), leakage from the duct is detected by means of devices of the infra-red gas analyser type and sensitive to CO 2 gas.
