Abstract

1,062,292. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 7, 1966 [Feb. 12, 1965], No. 6266/65. Heading G6C. A method of detecting a leak in the cladding of a fuel element comprises enclosing within the cladding a solid radio-active substance which decays to produce an alpha-particle emitting gas, and monitoring the reactor coolant to detect the presence of the gas. The solid radioactive substance may be thorium-228 or radium- 228 to produce radon-220 (thoron) or the substance may be radium-226 to produce radon-222.
