Abstract

703,917. External shoe drum brakes. STOECKICHT, W. Oct. 30, 1950 [March 28, 1950], No. 26425/50. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXIV] In a brake actuated by fluid pressure in an annular space in a casing acting to force a plurality of brake blocks individually into contact with a drum, each alternate brake block is provided with a metal sheet covering the gaps at both its ends between it and the adjacent blocks. As shown in Fig. 1 an annular pressure space in a casing 2 is shut off by blocks 3, the gaps between adjacent blocks being covered by metal strips 6, secured to alternate blocks, and an elastic packing ring 7. Lugs 4 on the blocks transmit the torque to slots 5 in the casing and retracting springs 8 are provided. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the blocks are anchored to the casing by pivoted links 10. In a further embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the elastic packing ring is dispensed with in favour of overlapping soft metal plates of U- section. Alternatively U-section members of'yielding packing material may be overlapped by U- section sheet metal members which are attached to, and cover the gaps at each end of alternate blocks. It is stated that the blocks may be arranged to move radially outwardly to engage an internal peripheral surface.
