Abstract

920,964. External shoe - drum brakes. FAWICK CORPORATION. Oct. 18, 1961, No. 37428/61. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] Segmental friction shoes 13 are contracted radially into clutch or brake engagement with an underlying drum 10 by a fluid-extensible rubber annulus 12. The space between adjacent shoes is bridged by a leaf-spring 28 with its sides housed in grooves 27 formed in the end faces of the shoes, and its ends bent over at 28a to engage the ends of plate-like elements 16 of the shoes. The spring serves to deflect friction sparks away from the annulus. Each shoe is formed with axial holes 17, 18, 19a for the passage of cooling air, and with holes 19 which are open to the radially outer face of the shoe and receive triangular rubber driving lugs 21 integral with the annulus. Each shoe is formed at its corners with attachment ears 22 and has a chamfered surface 23 between the ears co-operating with complementary driving lugs 24 formed on the annulus which are secured to the ears by pins 25 to assure radial movement of the shoes in response to inflation and deflation of the annulus. The shoes are retracted by the resilience of the annulus aided by centrifugal force. The shoes are formed from extruded aluminium alloy and have friction blocks 14 riveted thereto.
