Abstract

510,037. Disc brakes. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd., and EYSTON, G. E. T. May 18, 1938, No. 14892. [Class 103 (i)] A disc brake is applied by a plurality of pistons 45 mounted in cylindrical openings in the wall of the casing 12 and connected by an annular passage 44, in the wall of the casing which supplies pressure fluid. The casing comprises an annular disc 10 bolted as at 11 to the vehicle framework and fixed by studs 14 to the rim 13 of the annular wall of the casing 12. The brake disc 16 is splined with the intermediary of a sleeve 26 on a driving shaft 15. The pressure of the pistons 45 is transmitted to the brake disc to force it against the disc 10 by a pressure plate 18 which is mounted by rollers in slots in the rim 13 parallel with the axis of the brake. The plate 18 is provided with return springs:and adjustable stops as is also the brake disc 16, those for the latter being shown at 56 and 57 respectively. The brake may also be applied by a sleeve 63 adapted to be moved inwardly against the pressure plate 18 by inclined slots 67 in a sleeve 61 fixed to the casing 12, when the sleeve 63 is turned by a ring 72. The ring 72 and the sleeve 63 are connected by studs 66 carrying rollers 68 engaging in the slots 67. The brake friction lining 17 is mounted on rings 34 mounted on radially arranged strips 35 between which are gaps for cooling air. The disc 16 is provided with radial openings. A modified disc is shown which is flexible and dished so that it returns itself to release position. The brake is shown modified for use in an epicyclic gearbox. In this construction the annular passage is.formed by an annular recess in the brake casing covered by a detachable plate.
