Abstract
583,693. Friction clutches. KESTERTON, H. M. Nov. 17, 1944, No. 22849. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch of the kind having rollers or other wedging means located by a cage between the tapered conical inner surface of a driving (or driven) member and the correspondingly tapered polygonal outer surface of a driven (or driving) member, the cage is a resilient synchronizing member. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the driving member b, slidably splined on a driving shaft a, coacts with the driven member d through rollers e. The cage comprises a resilient split ring g lying across notches in the rollers e and having a gapped flange h which, on engaging the clutch by sliding the member b to the left, contacts the surface c and effects partial or full synchronization of the members b, d, before the rollers come intoaction. The ring g is prevented from rotating relative to the member d by a stop i which can be a plain peg, as shown, or a spring-loaded wedge pressing between mutally inclined ends of the ring g. In a modification (not shown), the ring g is located directly on the member d, and the rollers are unnotched.
