Abstract
840,434. Centrifugal clutches. CITROEN S.A., A. June 20, 1957 [July 17, 1956], No. 19504/57. Class 80 (2). A centrifugal clutch comprises a back plate 18 secured to a flywheel 23 on an input shaft 1, a movable pressure plate assembly 20, 22 and a driven clutch disc 19 on an output shaft 12. The plates 20, 22 are urged apart by springs 27, Fig. 4, against stop members 21 while springs 30, Fig. 3, urge the plates 20, 22 to the disengaged position. Centrifugal masses 25 are rotatably mounted on pins 3 on the flywheel and are adapted to move axially on swinging out under centrifugal force owing to a helical groove and ball connection 4 to thrust against the plate 22. This thrust is transmitted through the springs 27 to plate 20 which moves against the springs 30 to engage the disc 19. The weights 25 are coupled by links 26 to ensure symmetrical operation and their outward movement is limited by stops 32. Sliding movement between the plates 18, 20, 22 is guided by pins 9, 10 and the clearance between plates 20, 22 is provided to be always sufficient to allow of an overriding manual clutch release through thrust race 13, levers 15 and pins 17.
