Abstract

561,014. Friction clutches. THELANDER, W. V. June 11, 1942, No. 8003. [Class 80 (ii)] A pair of driven clutch plates 15, 16, mounted on a shaft 12 and sleeve 13 respectively, co-operate with a pressure plate 20 and a flywheel 10 and cover 11 thereof. Rods 29 fixed to the pressure plate 20 and slidable through holes 30 in the cover 11 carry plates 32, 33, pressed apart by preloaded springs 34, 35. Levers. 42, 43; pivoted at 45 to a lug 44 on the cover 11 have fingers 48 engaging flanges 40, 41, on the plates 32, 33, and are connected to a slidable manually controlled sleeve 55 by toggle links 49, 50: Movement of the sleeve 55 from the central position shown will produce engagement of either plate 15 or 16, the pressure being transmitted to the pressure plate through the springs 34, 35. In the extreme positions of the sleeve 55 a projection 56 thereon engages either the face 57 of the cover 11 or a ring 58 fixed to the lug 44, and the link 49 or 50, has just passed its radial position, so that the sleeve 55 is held in the extreme positions by the pressure of the springs 34, 35. In the disengaged position the pressure plate 20 is maintained in the central position by spring-pressed plungers 62 carried thereby, some of the plungers 62 engaging the face 23 of the cover 11 and others engaging the face 21 of the flywheel 10.
