Abstract
575,937. Clutches. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd., CONDIE, J. R., and BROCK, C. T. Jan. 14, 1944, No. 775. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch, in which the driven member 21 on shaft 11 is engaged by an axially movable pressure plate 18 by means of a number of springs 24, the disengagement is effected by a sliding sleeve 37 on an extension 38 of the cover-plate 39 which operates through a number of toggle linkages 46, 44 onto clutch levers 26. The arrangement is such that in the disengaged position shown in Fig. 1 the toggle links 46 move past their dead-centre position at right angles to the clutch axis to hold the clutch disengaged and to relieve the thrust race 36 of the operating mechanism of the spring load. A weighted arm 70 may be provided on each of the levers 26 to neutralise the effect of centrifugal force on the linkage.
