[Also in Group XXXIV] A friction clutch, which may be between a driving flywheel 3 and a driven shaft 2 in an eccentric press, is engaged when fluid under pressure is admitted to a working space 9 between a non-rotating cylinder 8 and a non-rotating piston 11 connected by a thrust bearing 12 to an axially slidable sleeve 10 rotating with the driven shaft. As shown, the clutch comprises a ring-shaped friction lining 5 and a frusto-conical friction lining 6 which grips the flywheel 3 between them. Sealing rings 13, 14 prevent the escape of pressure fluid from the working space 9. The clutch is disengaged by springs 20 in the non-rotating cylinder 8 acting through a thrust bearing 18 to bias the sleeve 10 and the piston 11 leftwards of the Figure, and simultaneously engage a frusto-conical brake member 15 with a stationary housing 7. If the press jams, the fluid pressure in the working space 9 may be increased and the direction of rotation of the prime mover reversed.
