Abstract

723,542. Centrifugal friction clutches. SELFCHANGING GEARS, Ltd. Sept. 29, 1952 [Oct. 9, 1951], No. 23493/51. Class 80 (2) Segmental friction linings 7 and shoes 6 are mounted for independent radial sliding movement on pins 9 carried by the driving shaft 2. The segments 7 engage, under the action of centrifugal force, the inner periphery of a 'drum 3 on a driven shaft 5. Garter springs 14 are recessed in the shoes 6 and oppose the centrifugal force acting thereon whereby the segments 7 engage the drum 3 at low speeds and the shoes 6 move outwardly to increase the engaging pressure at higher speeds. A rubbing sleeve 12 of plastic or like material is provided on the pins 9. One-way clutches 21 are arranged between the driving and driven shafts 2, 5, whereby over-running of the driven shaft 5 is prevented.
