Clutches; variable-speed gearing.-In changespeed gearing wherein one or more slidable splined gears such as 5, Fig. 4, are used, the female splines in the gear are used for clutching. Thus the coacting clutch dogs 8 may simply engage unmodified spline grooves 12, Fig. 5. Preferably the splined grooves 12 are deepened as shown at 13, the dog-engaging deepened groove being narrower than the spline groove. This groove 13 is preferably formed by broaching right through the gear as shown in Fig. 4, but it may extend only a short distance. The gear-box is thus shortened.
