Abstract

746,373. Variable speed gearing. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. June 30, 1952, No. 16409/52. Class 80(2) In a change speed gearing with a plurality of forward gear ratios each engageable separately by a respective clutch which couples rotating gear elements together, and, preferably with a fluid coupling 2 on the input shaft 3, means are provided for permitting simultaneous engagement of two gear ratios for obtaining a parking lock or for braking or locking the gearing before the engagement of a gear ratio which is engaged by positive means. As shown for a countershaft gear having three forward and one reverse gear ratios, the three forward speeds are introduced by the engagement of friction clutches 12, 13, 14 and the reverse gear by a dog clutch 18. Cams 30...33 on a control shaft 29 actuate the clutches through linkwork. In passing from the neutral position to reverse, projections 36, 38 on the cams 31, 32 cause simultaneous engagement of the clutches 13, 14. This locks the gear train, prevents movement of the vehicle fitted with the gear and enables the reverse gear clutch 18 to be engaged without shock. The teeth of the dogs on the clutch 18 may be tapered to facilitate engagement and disengagement,
