Facilitating changing speed; clutches, claw.- In variable-speed gearing, change of mesh of toothed wheels and claw clutches is facilitated by the engagement of auxiliary friction pins which are disengaged prior to the toothed engagement. In the arrangement shown, a shaft B is driven from a shaft A<1> either through a clutch G, G<1> or through a reducing train A, C, F, E and a countershaft D. A member N splined on the shaft B carries the clutch member G and the toothed wheels E and also friction gears L, H adapted to engage gears M, K of corresponding ratios. When the clutch is to be engaged, the shaft B is speeded up by the prior engagement of the friction pair L, M. The friction pair H, K engages prior to the engagement of the toothed pair E, F. In each case, as the member N is moved on to effect the toothed engagement, the friction pair is disengaged. The friction gears are preferably of convex profile and faced with leather &c.
