Abstract

273,382. Humfrey, J. C. W., Sandberg, C. P., Sandberg, O. F. A., and Sandberg, N. P. P., (trading as Sandberg, C. P.). March 26, 1926. Clutches, freewheel; variablespeed gearing.-A free-wheel clutch comprising skewed rollers E, Fig. 2, interposed between concentric curved conical members C, D and adapted to jam in one direction, as described in Specification 248,183, is held in action by a spring J which may be compressed by a fork H to disconnect the clutch. This oneway clutch may be locked by an auxiliary positive clutch N, Fig. 6, as when the engine of a vehicle is to be used for braking. The clutch may be used to connect a loose gear L to its shaft B, as shown, or to connect aligned shafts. Two constructions of variable-speed gearing using the clutch are described. In one form, shown in Figs. 3 and 4, an arrangement comprising driving and driven shafts 1, 3 and a countershaft 18 is controlled by a lever 38 moved in the usual gate-change manner. The gears are constantly in mesh, and a fresh speed is brought in by releasing a selected one of a number of striking-forks 31 - - 31<c>, so that a clutch spring is freed and operates. The forks are carried by four sleeves 32, 35, &c. sliding on guides 33, 33a, and each carries a lug such as 43, 44 engaging a cam groove 41, 42 carried by two levers 36, 36a, which are rocked selectively one way and the other. Movement of the lever 38 in the plane of Fig. 4 selects, and in the plane of Fig. 3 operates. A reverse stop comprises a spring bolt 47 which must be moved out of the way on purpose. In the form shown in Fig. 5, preselection is effected by a lever 82, the change being effected by the clutch pedal 76. A clutch, according to the invention, is let in when noses 94, 94<1> snap into recesses in a block 89 which is cut from the lever 82. Specification 239,894 is referred to.
