Abstract
139,249. Bertelli, D. C. A., and Dalzell, T. Jan. 6, 1919. Variable-speed and reversing friction gearing suitable for motorvehicles comprises a roller b<1> slidable upon a driven shaft g and adapted to be driven from a co-axial fly-wheel e through an intermediate disk b<2>. The disk b' is adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the fly-wheel e and roller b' simultaneously, either by a pedal d or by a lever c, while a, directdriving clutch e' can be operated from the pedal d independently of the lever c. The clutch e<1>, which can be moved sufficiently by the pedal to disengage it from the fly-wheel, has clutch dogs h, Fig. 1, adapted to be engaged by dogs h' on the roller b<1> for direct driving. The disk b<2> is carried by a spindle i, Fig. 3, slidable in a frame i<1>, which is supported in bearings a<1> so as to be slidable transversely under the action of a lever l upon a sleeve l<1> on a fixed rod f<1>. The dish b' can be withdrawn simultaneously from engagement with the face of the flywheel and with the roller b<1> by turning the sleeve l<1>, the return movements being effected by springs k, j. As the frame i<1> slides, the spindle i is pulled out by a lever m attached to a fixed frame a. The lever c traverses the roller b' through link-work c', c<4>, c<5>. The sleeve L<1> is operable both from the lever c and from the pedal d, but there is a lostmotion device at l‹, which allows the independent movement of the pedal. In a modification, the clutch e' and roller b<1> are formed in one.
