Abstract

25,928. Cole, T, H. Nov. 20. Variable-apeed friction gearing, suitable for motorvehicles, comprises a driving fly-wheel B, Figs. 1 and 2, a clutch disk C, a roller G slidable on a driven shaft E, and a pair of intermediate disks F, F<1>. The disks F, F<1> are supported upon brackets H, H<1>, Fig. 3, which hang downwards from a shaft I and have a pivotal connexion therewith. The disks F, F<1> are normally pressed inwards against the rollers G and against the disk C by a spring L<6>, Fig. 1, a rod L<3>, and inclined links F<2>, F<3>, Fig. 2. The sbaft E has a collar E<1>, Fig. 1, engaging the boss of the disk C so that that disk may be engaged with and disengaged from the wheel B by sliding the shaft E longitudinally. A direct drive is obtained through a claw-clutch G', and reduced speeds through the friction gearing. When a pedal-lever L is depressed, a lever L<4>, Fig. 1, acting through a lever E<3> moves the shaft E so as to disconnect the disk C. Further movement of the lever L turns a lever L' so as to pull the rod L<3> and cause the links F', F<3>, Fig. 2, to thrust the disks F, F<1> apart and to tha right. The roller G is operated to vary the speed by a hand-lever K<6> through suitable link-work.
