Abstract
4018. Davis, O. W., and Breyfogle, J. W. Feb. 18. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-In change gearing, suitable for motor-vehicles, in which a solid drive is obtainable through a clutch and a reduced speed in either direction through epicyclic friction rollers, the clutch for producing the solid drive comprises an expansible ring 4 carried by a disk 3, secured to the motor shaft 2 and operated by a sliding cone 9, pivoted arm 5, and rock-shaft 6 provided with a lip &c. 7. The sun element is a friction cone 18 secured to the shaft 2. The ring 4 is adapted to engage a flange 21 upon a disk 20 loose upon the boss 19 of the cone 18. The planet elements are rollers 40 supported on spindles 39 extending between a ring 43 upon the disk 20, and a disk 37 loose on the driven shaft 23, which projects into the boss 19. A sleeve 24 sliding on a feather on the shaft 23, carries a claw clutch member 31 adapted to engage either a member 38 on the disk 37, or a member 36 upon a loose disk 33, which carries an internal friction surface 41 gearing with the rollers 40. The disk 33 is kept thrust to the right through a ball bearing 51, by a tbrust bar 46 which is held and adjusted by screws. The slow or starting speed is obtained by engaging the member 31 with the member 38, and applying a brake 35 to a flange 34 upon the disk 33. The fast speed is effected by releasing the brake 35 and expanding the ring 4. Reversal is brought about by releasing the ring 4, applying a brake 22 to the flange 21, and sliding the member 31 into engagement with the member 36.
