Abstract
9471. Davis, O. W. July 19, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Variable speed gearing; clutches. - Relates to frictional transmission gearing especially for motor road vehicles in which the motor and driven shafts are placed in line, and either clutched together to give a direct drive or connected through friction gearing to give variable speeds. Fig. 1 shows a plan and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the arrangement, while Figs. 4 and 5 show enlarged views of the clutch. The motor shaft 2 is placed in line with the driven shaft 7 and the direct drive is obtained by means of a clutch placed in a recess in the side of the fly-wheel 3. The driven shaft carries, keyed to it, but movable longitudinally, a friction disk 25 which is engaged by friction-wheels 20, driven from the fly-wheel 3 to give various speeds. The shafts 19 of the friction-wheels 20 are allowed a slight longitudinal movement in their bearings 18, which are mounted on a supplementary frame 16, suspended from the main frame 15 by spring bolts 17. The friction-wheels 20 are first brought into engagement by means of a pedal on the shaft 42, acting through links and bell-crank levers 38. Further movement of the pedal then swings the supplementary frame 16 forward bodily so as to engage the wheels 20 with the fly-wheel 3, this movement being allowed by the spring bolts 17. The disk 25 is adjusted in position to give any speed by a hand-lever 32 acting on the rod 31 through link-work. When the disk 25 is pushed into its extreme forward position, an arm 46 depending from the rod 31 engages the downwardlyextending arm 48 on the shaft 42 and thereby disengages the friction disks. At the same time, a bevelled spud 44, carried by the friction disk 25, operates the clutch, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, so as to give the direct drive. The clutch consists of an expansible ring 11 secured at 10 to a disk 8 which is fixed to the end of the driven shaft 7, and loosely supports the end of the motor shaft 2. The disk 11 is expanded so as to engage the fly-wheel by a lever 14 acted upon by the spud 44.
