Abstract

7098. Jackson, J. C. March 24. Variable speed gearing.- Relates to motor vehicles with friction-disk gearing, and comprises means for bringing the friction wheel into gear with the engine fly-wheel, traversing it for varying the speed, and for throwing it out of gear and applying the brake. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan of the gearing. The friction wheel c is mounted to slide laterally on a shaft c<1> mounted in swinging bearings connected by thrust rods to arms on a rock-shaft d. One d<2> of these arms is connected by a spring link f to the hand-lever e<2>, by the adjustment of which the wheel c may be pressed into engagement with the face of the engine fly-wheel b. The arm d<2> is also connected by a link e<5> to a second arm on the lever e<2>, and by a link h to a pedal h<2> by either of which disengagement may be effected. The handlever e<2> is also arranged so that when pushed forward to disengage the friction wheel by a further movement it operates the brake through the flexible connector g<2>. On the same axis as the lever e<2> is mounted a second hand-lever i<12>, which, through a ball-jointed link i<8>, is capable of imparting movement to an horizontally moving lever i<4> by which the wheel c is traversed across the face of the wheel b for varying the speed and reversing. The sprocket-wheel j through which motion is communicated from the shaft c<1> to the road wheels is loose on the shaft, but can be clutched thereto by the clutch j<1>, k<1>. This is normally kept in engagement by a spring, but provision is made for putting it out of action when required by turning the handle k<3> across the lugs c<3*>.
