Variable-speed gearing comprises a countershaft-like arrangement of two rows of constantmesh toothed wheels and coil one-way clutches which allow overrunning when a higher speed is brought in by a claw clutch. Of the main row 1 - - 4, the gear 1 is driven from the engine, and there are one-way clutches 11, 12, 13 respectively between the gears 4, 3, between the gears 3, 2, and between the gear 2 and a clutch head 14 fast on driven shaft 16. Of the countershaft row 5 - - 8, the first is fast on countershaft 9 and the others are loose. As clutch member 10 engages gear 8, the drive is picked up on the lowest speed of driven shaft 16, passing through train 1, 5, 9, 10, 8, 4, 11, 3, 12, 2, 13, 14, 16. Clutches 11, 12 overrun in succession as the gears 7, 6 are engaged by clutch 10. Clutch 13 overruns when clutch head 14 is engaged by a sliding clutch 15 for direct driving. In a modified arrangement, the one-way clutches are arranged between the wheels of the countershaft row, and the changes are effected by separate single clutches between the wheels of the main row. The one-way clutches may each comprise a helical spring 31, Fig. 3, within cavities 22, 23 in adjacent gears such as 3, 4 of Fig. 1. One end of spring 31 is secured to wheel 3 by a pin 24 with a flat head 25 engaging an inclined slot 26 in the spring. A similar pin 27 at the other end engaging an inclined slot in the spring is supported in a friction ring 28, which may be in parts separated by springs 30.
