459,151. Variable-speed gearing. BURN, L., 35, Panton Street, Haymarket, London. July 1, 1935, No. 18801. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to a gear employing a rotary slotted plate 10 having crossed slots engaging pins 16, 17 on a double crank 18 whose axis is offset from that of the slotted plate, so as to produce a 1 : 2 step-up or reduction. According to the invention, a coupling disc 22 coaxial with the double crank is connected to the plate 10 by pivoted links 26, means being provided for directly connecting at will either the coupling disc 22 or the double crank in the drive. In the form shown, speed change is effected by a sliding clutch 28, which may engage teeth 30 on a sleeve 23 on which the coupling disc 22 is mounted, or teeth 29 on the double crank 18. To lubricate the slots in the plate 10 a baffle 33 collects oil thrown off by the gear and returns it by a passage 36 to a chamber 37, from which it passes through ducts 38 in the hub of the disc to the slots. Oil passes along the slots by centrifugal force and collects at the ends thereof under a band 39. The collected oil passes through ducts 41 in slippers 21 to the crank-pins 16, 17. The gear may be connected in series with other double crank mechanism, or with the ordinary gear-box of a motor vehicle, the clutch 28 being operated by a Bowden cable from a lever on the usual gear-lever.
