Abstract
155,312. Rigby, E. J., and Clarke, P. C. June 14, 1919. Change-speed gearing.-A two-speed chain gear driven by the engine of a motor-vehicle is arranged in series with a two-speed toothed gear. Sprockets 2, 3 secured to the engine shaft 1* drive sprockets 6, 7 loose on a hollow shaft 26 and adapted to be selectively connected thereto by clutches operated by a rod 9, which passes through the shaft 26 and is actuated by a treadle lever 8. A double dogclutch 22 slides on a square sleeve 33 secured to the shaft 26 and is adapted to engage a clutch 23 and drive directly a sprocket 12 geared to the road wheels. The clutch 22 may alternatively engage a clutch 23, when the drive passes through a loose gear 20, and countershaft gears 21, 16 to a gear 18 secured to the sprocket 12.
