658,966. Variable-speed gearing. MONGE, J. R. B. Dec. 23, 1947, Nos. 34067 and 34068. Convention dates, Nov. 30, 1946, and Oct. 31, 1947. [Classes 136 (i) and 136 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A mechanism box for bicycles, motor assisted bicycles or motor cycles takes the place of the hub of the crank axle gear of the cycle and is adapted to group together free wheel means, a change speed device, a brake and means for driving a lighting generator and a speedometer in combination with a chain sprocket. The crank axle 8 passes through the box and comprises two diametrically opposed arms 11 carrying axles 12 on which are freely mounted satellites 13. Each satellite comprises three pinions of successive sizes engaging with three toothed annuli 5, 6, 7 turning freely within the casing but separately immobilised by pawls acting on ratchets 19, 20 or 21. The satellites engage with a central pinion 14 turning on the axle 8 and solid with the chain sprocket 15 which is formed with a drum 55 housing the brake element 18 and driving the generator 22. The pinions 5, 6, 7 are contained in an oil bath separated from the chain sprocket 15 by a partition 17 preventing escape of oil to the brake. In a four speed construction, Fig. 6, the satellite, 28 comprises only two gears engaging two toothed annuli 26, 27. The smaller pinion of the satellites engages a central gear wheel 30 connected by means of a pawl drive functioning in one direction only with the chain sprocket 32. The larger satellite pinion engages with a central pinion 29 connected to the chain sprocket 32 by a manually controlled pawl 33.
