Abstract

Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a train of combined friction and toothed or shrouded toothed gears b, c, d, Fig. 4, the intermediate one c being floating or not supported on a spindle, and being automatically wedged between the other two by the reactions of the teeth and of the friction surfaces. The gear b is secured to a driving-shaft a, which may be the pedal axle of a cycle. The gear d is supported on an axle e in a driven chain-wheel &c. g and meshes constantly with a central gear n, Fig. 7. The gear n is rotatively connected constantly by a sliding clutch member h with a detent wheel j. The wheel j is kept from turning backwards by a pawl, and with the member h moved to the right of Fig. 7 against a spring x, the gear n is held fast and the gear d rolls upon it, driving the wheel g at a reduced speed. When the clutch member h is slid to the left, it engages a member 5 upon the shaft a, locking the gearing solid for a high speed.
