Abstract

22,293. Blair, W. Nov. 1. Variable-speed gearing. -In a three-speed gear for cycles and the like, compound planet-pinions 3, 3A gear with s u npinions 1, 2, and the changes of gear are effected by the joint movement of a sliding sleeve 5 and the pinion 1, permanently-operative one-way clutches being provided at 5 and 5 and a disconnectible one-way clutch at 4. Thus, with the parts in the position shown, the gear turns as a whole, giving the direct drive. By sliding the parts 1, 5 to the right so that the sun-pinion is locked to teeth 7 upon the axle, a high-speed gear is obtained, the hub being driven through the pinions 3, internally-toothed ring 4, and the clutches 4A, 5, the clutch 5 overrunning. To obtain the low speed, the sun-pinion and the sleeve are moved still farther to the right so that a smooth surface 5<0> comes under the clutch portion upon the ring 4, and then the hub is driven through the pinions 3, 3, 2 and the sleeve 5. A spring 1 returns the parts to normal position. By providing a brake surface 4, Fig. 2, upon the ring 4, a fourth speed may be furnished, this speed being given when the ring is held stationary and the parts are in the normal position as shown in Fig. 1. Instead of there being teeth 7, the sun pinion may be slid into a recess cut in an enlarged portion of the axle and so held stationary.
