3928. Griffin, F. A. Feb. 16. Driving-mechanism, two-speed, for cycles &c. In the type of two-speed gear described in Specification No. 3881, A.D. 1906, to provide a free-wheel on both speeds by the gear itself, the positive clutch device between the sunpinion and the carrier is replaced by a pawl-andratchet arrangement. The carrier J fixed to the hub has a flange J<1> provided internally with ratchet teeth L to engage pawls E upon an extension D<1> of the sun-pinion, pawls G upon a fixed piece H being adapted to engage ratchet teeth F. For the low gear the parts G, F are in engagement, but by sliding the members C, D, D' to the right, these parts are disengaged and the pawls E brought into engagement with the teeth L so that the gear turns as a whole. By allowing the clutching to overlap, no neutral position occurs during the change of gear.
