Abstract

22,652. Saunders, M. Oct. 26. Driving-mechanism. -In a three-speed gear for cycles, of the kind employing two sets of intermeshing planet-pinions, the carrier is arranged as the driven member of the train and drives the hub shell at each of the speeds, while the internal wheel meshing with one set of planet-pinions is mounted upon the sprocket-wheel sleeve. As shown in Fig. 1, planet-pinions F, F<1>, mounted upon a carrier C, gear with sun-pinions G, G<1>, of which the pinion G is, by means of a clutch O<1>, allowed to rotate forwards but not backwards, while the pinion G<1> is adapted to be clutched to a stationary part to prevent its forward rotation. The carrier is connected to the hub by a one-way clutch J which remains inoperative when the carrier, planet-pinions, and sun-pinions are moved to the right or left to give the changes of gear. For the direct drive, the carrier is clutched at R to the driving-sleeve. The internal wheel may mesh with the shorter planetpinions instead of with the longer ones, and sunpinions of the same diameter may be used. In lieu of sliding the carrier to effect the speed changes, the sun-pinion G<1> may be extended to carry a sliding clutch-piece, whereby the pinion may be connected to the carrier or to a fixed part. In this case, the clutch R is dispensed with and the carrier may be attached to the hub shell. The planetpinions may further be so proportioned that they intermesh on both sides of each pinion. Specification No. 28,361, A.D. 1907, is referred to.
