Abstract
17,593. Maynes, H. F. Oct. 6, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Driving-mechanism.-In two-speed driving-gear for bicycles and other vehicles, the gear is mounted upon the spindle of the driving-wheel and is connected with clutch mechanism by means of which the gear can be changed from the high speed to the low speed and vice versÔ by back-pedalling. The gear also permits free-wheeling. The chain-wheel 7 is fixed to a sleeve 5, which, at the low speed, drives the hub 3 directly by means of a ball clutch 20. On the end of the sleeve 5 away from the chainwheel is keyed a sleeve 8 which, together with a ring 9, supports planetary gear-wheels 17 gearing both with a fixed wheel 16 on the spindle and with an annular wheel 14 fixed to a sleeve 13. This sleeve forms the high-speed driving-sleeve and drives the hub through a ball clutch 19 ; when it is in use, the clutch 20 of the low-speed sleeve 5 over-runs. To change from the high speed to the low speed, the balls of the clutch 19 are prevented from engaging the hub by confining them in their pockets by means of a sleeve 32, which is moved longitudinally by the partial rotation of a ring 28, in which there is a cam-groove 31 engaging internal projections on the sleeve 32. Each time the rider back-pedals, the cam-ring 28 is given a partial rotation on the sleeve 13 sufficient to move the clutch-controlling sleeve 32 either into or out of the way of the balls 19. This rotation of the ring 28 is obtained by means of the relative rotation of the high and low speed sleeves 13, 5. A sleeve 21 frictionally engaging the sleeve 5 is formed with a lateral projection 23 which enters a notch 24 in the end of the sleeve 13 and has a certain amount of play therein. A pawl 26 fixed to the projection 23 engages teeth on the edge of the ring 28. Whenever the rider back-pedals, the sleeve 21 is dragged forwards a short distance relatively to the high-speed sleeve by the low-speed sleeve and advances the ring 28 through the distance required to effect the change of gear. A pawl 30 fixed to a collar 27 secured to the end of the sleeve 13 prevents backward motion of the ring 28.
