Abstract

29,217. Sangster, C. T. B. Dec. 22. Driving-mechanism.-In change-speed gearing of the twin epicyclic-train type, having collectively slidable but independently rotatable sun-wheels, and with the planet-pinions of both trains mounted on a common carrier, a pawl-and-ratchet clutch g is interposed between the carrier c and a ring q<1>, which engages by teeth g<2> with the internal wheel b<1> of the high-speed train ; and an externally-toothed sleeve h connected with the sun-wheels is adapted to engage with teeth h<1>, h<3> formed on the internal wheel a' of the low-speed train and on the planet carrier, respectively. For the high speed, the sleeve h couples the internal wheel a<1> and the carrier together, and the sun-wheel b' is locked by interengaging teeth to a boss j<1> on the axle. The drive is then transmitted from the sprocket sleeve e, to which the internal wheel a' is secured, through the carrier and the high-speed train, and thence to the hub either directly or through a free-wheel clutch f<1>, f<2>. For the intermediate speed, both sun-wheels are freed from the axle, the carrier and internal wheel a being still coupled together ; the drive is transmitted through the carrier, the clutch between the ring g<1> and the carrier, and thence through the internal ring b<1> to the hub. For the low speed, the sun-wheel a<2> is locked to the boss i<1> on the axle, the carrier and internal wheel are disassociated, and drive is transmitted from the sleeve e through the low-speed train, the clutch g, and from the internal wheel b<1> to the hub. The teeth h<1> on the internal wheel a<1> may be replaced by teeth on the sprocket sleeve ; when a free-wheel clutch is interposed between the internal wheel of the high-speed train and the hub, one element k of a back-pedalling brake may be formed on the sprocket sleeve.
