Abstract
535,851. Variable-speed gearing. RUTT, A. Oct. 18, 1939, No. 26021. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iv)] Power transmitting means includes a pivotal member 1 carrying one or more revoluble weights 11, 12 mounted on opposite sides of the fulcrum of the pivotal member 1, rotation of the weights in opposite directions producing a rocking motion of the member 1 from which a drive may be taken. As shown, for a variable-speed ratchet gear, the member 1 consists of spaced plates, 1, 1a and pivots about bearings 4, 4a. Oppositely revolving weights 11, 11a, and 12, 12a, are mounted on the beam the weights 11, 11a, being 180 degrees out of phase with the weights 12a, 12, respectively. The four weights are interconnected by bevel gearing as shown in Fig. 4, the weights 11, 11a being rotated from a motor 27a, and the weights 12, 12a from a motor 27. The motors are carried by the member 1 and oscillate therewith. The movement of the member 1 produces reciprocation of links 30, 30a, Fig. 5, which motion is transformed into unidirectional rotation of a shaft 39 through gears 32, 32a, 34, 34a, 36, 36a, and oppositely acting ratchet clutches 40, 40a. The shaft 39 may be the drive shaft of a vehicle.
