Variable-speed gearing comprises planetary spur or worm gears coacting with variable oscillators through one-way clutch devices the rollers, pawls, &c. of which are adapted to be held out of action in phases. The speed transmitted is thereby reduced. Spur planets e carried by a driving-shaft a mesh with and drive in turn a sun gear d fast on a driven shaft b. Coaxially of each planet e is an oscillator f having a projection h extending into a circular non-revoluble track j adapted to be displaced radially to vary the throw of the oscillators by a screw m and hand-wheel n. Between the elements f and e are the gripping rollers &c. g of one-way clutches. These rollers are held out of action by the coned edges of lateral plates t, u. Each plate t is movable towards fixed plate u in phase by a plunger p adapted to be operated as the shaft a turns by a fixed face cam o. In the case of worm gearing, a peripheral cam operates the clutches.
