Abstract

270,699. Fontaine, R. F. M. May 4, 1926, [Convention date]. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. - A spur epicyclic train A, C, B, Fig. 1, is controlled by driving the annulus B through a worm D and through a disc and roller variable gear 10, 12, the whole being controlled by a governor F upon the driving-shaft 1. The planet gear C is supported on a spider 3 fast on the driving shaft 1. The sun gear A is fast on an intermediate driven shaft 2 which drives a shaft 31, which may be the cardan shaft of a vehicle, through a countershaft reversing - gear. The worms D are supported in a iixed frame and are driven through skew and bevel gearing 16, 14 from the shaft 13 of the friction roller 12. The disc 10 is driven through a pair 9, 8 from the shaft 1. The speed at which the shaft 2 is driven depends on the position of the roller 12, which is moved through a screw 29 by the governor F. The governor shifts axially a pair of friction bevels 26, 27 so that a bevel 28 carried by the screw 29 is turned in one direction or the other. When a clutch-faced gear 35 is slid to the left, the shaft 31 is driven directly. When the gear 35 is slid to the right into mesh with an idler 36, the shaft 31 is driven reversely through train 35 - - 39. A free-wheel clutch 40 prevents the road-wheels from driving back to the engine. The governor within drum F is constructed as shown in Fig. 3. Levers 20 pivoted to the rotary drum at 21 carry each a weight 19 and are pulled inwards by springs 22. The outer end of each lever 20 is connected by a link 24 to a nut 23 the turning of which effects the axial shift of the bevels 26, 27.
