661,160. Variable-speed gearing. CHERON, E. Dec. 9, 1949 [Dec. 9, 1948], No. 31695/49. Class 80 (ii) Variable-speed gearing comprises a number of epicyclic trains A-E each consisting of a sun gear 4 loose on the driving shaft 1, a sun gear 5 fixed on the shaft 1, and a carrier 6 for double planets, the carrier 6 of the last train E being secured to the driven shaft 2, the carrier of each train A-D being secured to the loose sun gear 4 of the succeeding train B-E, and the loose sun gear 4 of the first train A being driven from the shaft 1 by variable-speed friction gear. The latter comprises a pair of spring-pressed rollers 23 each in helically-splined connection with a sleeve 20 which has bevel teeth 17 meshing with bevel teeth 15 on the gear 4 and which is journalled on a transverse spindle 18 fixed in the casing. The rollers 23 frictionally engage a plate 30 splined in a flywheel 27 secured on the shaft 1 and urged against the rollers by centrifugallyacting wedge-shaped masses 28. Forks 32 engaging the rollers are movable through rack- and-sector gearing by a control lever 39, Fig. 3, swivelling on the ball end 41 of a spindle 45 connected to the sectors. The lever has projections 44 normally engaging grooves 42 in the ball, in which position the rollers move automatically along the sleeves 20, so as to vary the gear ratio in accordance with the load, between the high gear position shown in Fig. 1 and the neutral position 23a. By turning the lever 39 so as to engage the, projections 44 in notches 43, the position of the rollers may be manually controlled by tilting of the lever, and the rollers may be moved to a position 23b to give reverse drive.
