Abstract

660,452. Variable speed gearing. KRISPIS, C. Feb. 4, 1948 [March 28, 1947; May 5, 1947], Nos. 3215/48 and 3216/48. Class 80 (ii) A load-speed responsive gearing comprises an automatic clutch having eccentric masses adapted for planetary movement about a driving shaft axis, which masses, in dependence upon the speed ratio of the driving and driven shafts, are either stationary on their own axes to directly couple the said shafts or rotate when layshaft gearing including a free-wheel device couples the shaft. Applied to an automobile three-speed gearing and having two such devices in series, the driving shaft 11 carries a gear 12 which, with a disc 19 rotatable on an intermediate driven shaft 20, support crankpins 16 bearing the eccentric masses 18 and integral pinions 17 meshing with a gear 22 keyed to the driven shaft 20, which shaft is also interconnected with the gear 12 by gears 14, 24 on a layshaft 15 and a gear 23, the gear 24 having a free-wheel device 26. When the speed of the shaft 11 is high relative to the load and hence speed of the shaft 20, drive is through the latter gearing, but as this ratio falls the masses 18 slow until yielding direct drive with overrunning of the clutch 26. The other series part of the gearing is similar, but has larger masses 28 and gears to produce a lower ratio, thereby providing a three-speed gearing. The final driven shaft 31 is connected to the output shaft 37 by a splined clutch 38, 39 and conventional reversing gearing, a controlling lever 40 therefor having forward, neutral and reverse positions: A lever 44 controlling clutch members 41, 42 permits locking gear 34 to the layshaft 15 and thereby braking on the engine. In a modification the gears 17, 22 &c. are replaced by a system of levers and cranks.
