Abstract

586,247. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. HOWARD, A. C. Nov. 24, 1944, No. 23484. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A reaction planet-carrier 24 of a three-element train, including suns 21, 22 on aligned driving and driven shafts 11, 12 and stepped planets 25, drives, through a reversely acting one-way clutch 30 and wheel pair 28, 32, the parallel shaft 33 of an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic power regenerator (not shown), feeding, under manual rheostatic, restrictor-valve or like control, a booster motor (not shown) on a parallel shaft 42 driving the driven shaft 12 through a oneway clutch 38 and wheel-pair 41, 37. A direct solid drive is provided by clutching together the planet-carrier 24 and driving sun 21, at friction surfaces 44 engaged by a manually-operated sliding cone 47, and a fixed-ratio reduction is obtained by applying a band-brake 50 to the regenerator-shaft 33. The one-way clutches 30, 38 allow the regenerator and booster to be overrun in direct-drive, and each comprises balls or rollers between cam-projections 30, 38 and camrecesses in the wheels 28, 37, which, under drivetorque, press the wheels into frictional engagement with the adjacent face of the planet-carrier 24 in the case of the wheel 28, and wheel 35 keyed to the driven shaft 12 in the case of the wheel 37. Reverse is by meshing a stepped idler 53 with the driven shaft wheel 35 and a wheel 51 on the regenerator-shaft 33, through an additional idler (not shown). Control, except for reverse, which has a separate lever, is by a single lever movable in a straight slot with three notches for respectively applying the reduceddrive brake 50, the direct-drive clutch 44, or disengaging both and opening the circuit of the regenerator, the slot having a lateral extension across which the lever can be moved for control of the regenerator rheostat or restrictor-valve. The rheostat may be in the field circuit of a shunt-wound generator, feeding a series-wound booster motor.
