Abstract

1,004,834. Hydrostatic transmissions; change speed gear. MASSEY-FERGUSON Inc. April 25, 1962, No. 15682/62. Headings F2C and F2D. A motor vehicle transmission comprises an enginedriven continuously variable hydrostatic gear 35, with a variable stroke pump 39 and a reversible constant stroke motor 42 on output shaft 38, a separately and constantly engine - driven power take-off shaft 25, and a combining planetary gear with a ring gear 71 driven by the power take-off shaft 25, a sun wheel 70 on output shaft 38 and, carrying planet wheels 74, an output shaft 75, which is either connected directly or, for industrial tractors, through planetary reversing gear to output shaft 17. The planetary reversing gear provides direct drive when hydraulic disc clutch 84 locks the planetary gear train or reverse drive when brake band 76 holds ring gear 81 stationary the planet carrier 78 carrying pairs of intermeshing planet wheels 80 the wheels of each pair also meshing respectively with the sun gear 77 and ring gear 81. Hand lever 55 controls the inclination of swashplate 41 through hydraulic servo 51 and hence the transmission speed ratio. The modified transmission of Fig. 3 in which ring gear 71a is either driven through disc clutch 107 from the power take-off shaft 25a or held still by brake band 102 provides 3 speed ranges : high speed when axially movable internally splined coupling member 110 couples output shafts 17a and 38a directly; and when coupling member 110 couples shaft 17a with planet carrier 75a intermediate speed when clutch 107 is engaged and low speed when brake band 102 is applied and clutch 107 is released.
