Abstract

638,734. Variable-speed gearing. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. April 20, 1948, No. 10903. Convention date, May 8, 1947. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed drive from an input shaft 2 to the revolving platform 1 of an anti-aircraft gun or other automatic firearm comprises one or more (as shown, three) driven rollers 6 mounted on an output shaft 8 and engaging driving toric races on discs 3, 4 oppositely rotated at equal speeds from the shaft 2, a gear 10 on which directly engages an axially spring-biased gear 12 driving the disc 3 via camming balls 13 and powers the disc 4 via an idler train 15, 17 and a gear 18 formed on the disc. The shaft 8 transmits the drive to the platform 1 through a gear pair 19, 20 and a planet 21 meshing a stationary reaction sun 22. Each roller 6 is slidably and rotatably mounted on a spindle 23 pivoted between arms 7a on the shaft 8 which is axially slidable under the control of a fork 25 to tilt the rollers one way or the other from the central neutral position shown to give forward or reverse drive respectively. Instead of being centrally pivoted, the roller spindles may be pivoted to a peripheral support rigid with the output shaft.
