729,860. Variable-speed gear. O'HARA, T. M. June 18, 1953, No. 16868/53. Class 80(2). Automatically variable velocity ratio planetary geaiing comprises a driving (or driven) shaft 1 integral with a carrier 2 supporting planet gears 11 meshing a sun-gear 8 on a driven (or driving) shaft 4, the spindle 9 fast with each planet supporting a two-part housing 20 containing a heavy liquid, such as mercury. Each of the compartments 25 of the housings 20 includes an inclined baffle 24, so arranged that, on rotation of the gear, it tends to move the heavy liquid inwardly, towards the gearing axis, against the effect of centrifugal force, and thus produces a reaction on the planet gears which enables torque to be transmitted.
