Abstract

1,056,539. Variable-ratio gearing. INPOWER WORKS (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. Sept. 20, 1963 [Sept. 28, 1962], No. 37136/63. Heading F2D. Epicyclic gearing has planet gears 16 fast with vaned wheels 18 which pump liquid from a centrifugally formed ring 56 into pockets 42 against the centrifugal head of liquid contained therein to provide the necessary reaction for the transmission of torque through the epicyclic gear. As shown, a planet carrier 12 is fast with an input shaft 10 and carries the planet gears 16 meshing idler planet gears 28 which mesh an output sun 26, a drum 12a containing the liquid being freely rotatable about the input shaft 10 and output shaft 22. The carrier 12 has inwardly directed partitions 40 fixed thereto which co-operate with the drum 12a to form pockets 42. In operation, with the output shaft stationary, rotation of the input shaft rotates the planets 16 and pump wheels 18, gradually causing the drum 12a to be entrained and the formation of the centrifugal ring of liquid 56. In a modification the drum 12a is integral with the planet carrier 12, in another modification the idler planets 28 are dispensed with, the planets 16 meshing directly with the output sun 26. In a further modification, the output sun 26 is replaced by an output ring gear. In another modification (Fig. 6, not shown), the drum is formed as the input member and has internal teeth meshing the planet gears 16 which mesh the output sun 26 through idler planets 28, the planet carrier 12 being freely rotatably mounted about the input shaft 10. In another modification the planets 16 and sun 26 are formed as sprockets which are interconnected by a chain. The vanes of the pump wheel 18 may be straight or curved or they may be formed as buckets.
