409,184. Variable-speed gearing. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, AKT.-GES., Friedrichshafen-on-Bodensee, Germany. Aug. 14, 1933, No. 22661. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1932. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to constant mesh gears of the kind in which gear wheels 5, 6, 7 are mounted in bearings in the casing and can be brought into action by toothed clutches 20, 21 provided with synchronizing friction clutches 11 .... 15, the main shafts being arranged coaxially within the gears ; a free-wheel 31 also is provided. According to the invention, direct drive is obtained by shifting an intermediate shaft 3 which is in permanent engagement, either directly or through the free-wheel, with one of the main shafts. As shown, the shaft 3 engages the inner member 32 of the free-wheel, and carries teeth 54 adapted to engage teeth 53 on the driving-shaft 1 when the shaft 3 is slid fully to the right, thus giving the direct drive to the driven shaft 2. For low speed, the shaft 3 is shifted to the left to engage the gear 7, and the clutch 20 is shifted to the left to engage the gear 5, so that the drive is through the gears 5, 23, 25 and 7. For second speed, the clutch 20 is shifted to the right, so that the drive is through the gears 6, 24, 25, and 7. For third speed, the clutch 20 is shifted to the left, the clutch 21 to the right, and the shaft 3 sufficiently to the right to disengage it from the gear 7, so that the drive is through gears 5, 23, 24, and 6, and shaft 3. For reverse, the countershaft 28 is slid to the right, so that the gear 26 thereon engages the gear 25 on the countershaft 22, while the gear 27 engages teeth 29 on the outside of the member 31, thus bridging the free-wheel.
