Abstract

179,730. Stanhope, H. March 8, 1921. Deflectable axle-ends; controlling different functions by same handle.-A driving and steering wheel is spring mounted on and pivoted to an L-shaped casting which can slide on longitudinal frame members, the wheel being driven through tcothed gearing from a universally jointed shaft driven by belt and expanding pulley gearing; the movement of the casting along the frame members effects the tensioning of the belt and is controlled from the same lever as the expanding pulley. The wheel 16 is mounted on a short axle 15 mounted in a member 4 which is provided with ears riding between springs mounted on vertical rods mounted on a bearing plate 20, the member 4 being pivoted in the casting 1. The casting 1 is provided with holes 5, 6 by means of which it is adjustably supported on longitudinal frame members. The wheel is driven by a shaft 9 and toothed gearing 17, 18, the shaft 9 being driven by a double pulley 7 mounted on a bearing 2. The casting is moved longitudinally by a rod 34 operated by a hand-controlled screw 36 and the rod is connected by a lever 49 and links 47, 48 to levers 43, 44 operating the expanding pulleys 39.
