354,626. Tractors driving external machines. RUF, A., Sch÷neberg, near Pfaffenhausen, Swabia, Germany. Oct. 23, 1930, No. 31887. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (ii).] In a tractor having an engine driving the road wheels through belt gearing and a countershaft which can be disconnected from the road wheels to enable various machines to be driven, the means for disconnecting the road wheels from the engine consists of an idle gear wheel u adapted to be slid by means of its shaft out of gear with the engine. The engine a normally drives the road wheels through belt gearing g, a countershaft k and gearing q, u, s, the shaft of the idle wheel u being moved axially until the wheel gears with the wheels q, s. When the wheel u is free of the other gears the shaft k can be used to drive external machines, and the speed of the shaft can be regulated by means of a belt-tensioning roller d controlled by a hand-lever p. The tensioning device can be used as a clutch to allow the wheel u to be put into gear to drive the vehicle without stopping the engine. A tool-box c is provided.
