Abstract

678,418. Motor vehicles, SUDWERKE GES. July 31, 1950 [Oct. 25, 1949], No. 19083/50. Classes 79(ii) and 79(iii) In a motor vehicle having at least two independent engines, each capable of operating after disablement or removal of the other engine, the engines are associated with a common propeller shaft and are arranged in a series in line with each other in the direction of travel, the shaft being axially aligned with and connected to the crankshaft of the engine at one end of the series. As shown the axle 9 of a motor vehicle is driven through the propeller shaft 8, change speed gearing 7, a clutch 6 and one engine 1. The engine 1 is connected by a free wheel device 5 to another engine 2, so that both engines can drive the axle if required. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), four engines are mounted on a vehicle in pairs, each pair being interconnected by a free wheel device and connected to a propeller shaft for driving one axle.
