Abstract

885,580. Motor vehicle driving arrangements. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 15, 1960 [July 15, 1959], No. 24774/60. Class 79(2). The engine of a motor vehicle is combined with the transmission gear and differential gear into a single unit dispersed at the front or rear of the vehicle and an output shaft of the differential gear extends through the engine in the vicinity of the crankshaft. The axis of the crankshaft 12, Fig. 4, is longitudinally disposed and may be to one side of the vehicle centre line 13. The transmission 15 may be of the automatic type embodying a torque converter and gear unit with control means for effecting an automatic shift from one gear ratio to another and is disposed alongside the engine and may be connected with the output shaft thereof by a chain drive. The input shaft 19 of the differential gear 24, 25 is connected to the output shaft of the transmission. The differential gear is also disposed alongside the engine and has two output shafts 31, 32, the former passing through a tubular member 39 formed in the sump 38. The disposition of t h e member 39 with respect to the crankshaft 42 is shown in Fig. 3. The wheels are driven by cardan shafts 51 attached to elements 52 upon the differential output shafts. The length of the cardan shafts 51 permits wheel movements of suspension, deflection a n d steering. The wheels may be connected to the half shafts by universal joints of constant velocity type.
