Abstract

715,602. Momentum power-storing apparatus. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Dec. 24, 1952 [Dec. 29, 1951], No. 32766/52. Class 10 [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle driving arrangement comprising a power unit and a rotary inertia mass separate from the power unit, coupling means are provided whereby the vehicle axle can be driven by the power unit alone, the rotary inertia mass alone or the unit and the mass at the same time. As shown in an omnibus 1 an internal combustion engine 3 is connected through a hydraulic clutch 4, change speed gearing 5 and a jointed shaft 6 to the rear axle 2 of the vehicle. A flywheel 7 having a vertical axis and arranged either in vacuo or in gases providing less frictional resistance than air in a casing 8 is connected by bevel gearing 9 and a hydraulic clutch 10 to the change speed gearing. By suitable operation of the clutches 4, 10 the vehicle can be driven either by the engine 3 or the flywheel 7 or by both simultaneously. The clutches 4, 10 may be replaced by hydraulic torque converters or other form of disengageable coupling means. A freewheel clutch may be arranged between the engine 3 and gearing 5 to disengage the engine when it is .slower than the flywheel. The flywheel may preferably be used only for accelerating the vehicle which is normally driven by the engine, but it may be connected to the wheels for power absorbtion during retardation of the vehicle.
